We recently gathered with over 100 government, industry, and non-profit professionals to brainstorm and debate information sharing and safeguarding standards and frameworks at the Workshop for Information Sharing and Safeguarding Standards (WIS3). Below is a brief summary of some of the challenges and solutions that government and industry leaders discussed at WIS3. This is by no means comprehensive, though, and we plan to release more robust outlines of the challenges that our community faces and our plans for solutions soon.

Anti-cyber threat centre launched: New UK initiative to share information

A new initiative to share information on cyber threats between businesses and government is to be launched. It will include experts from government communications body GCHQ, MI5, police and business and aims to better co-ordinate responses to the threats. There will be a secure web-portal to allow access to shared information in real time, like a "secure Facebook". UK networks are attacked by other states, criminals and companies seeking secrets, costing billions of pounds.

One of the main ways we do this is by promoting adoption of technical standards throughout government and industry so that more information sharing capabilities are built in to systems from the beginning.

FCW: An industry group has suggested five ways for agencies to share information in compatible formats to improve data and cooperation while saving some money too.

In a new report, the American Council for Technology/Industry Advisory Council argues that the government can share information seamlessly, save money, share more services, and reduce duplication. It just needs to improve its strategic acquisition and management processes by considering interoperability early in a project’s lifecycle.
