Department of Defense

The mission of the Department of Defense (DoD) is to provide the military forces needed to deter war and to protect the security of our country. With over 1.4 million men and women on active duty, and 718,000 civilian personnel, the DoD is the nation's largest employer. An additional 1.1 million serve in the National Guard and Reserve forces.

The DoD’s Information Sharing Strategy provides the common vision, methods, and goals that guide the Department’s many information sharing initiatives, governing the exchange of information within the DoD and with federal, state, local, and tribal partners, foreign governments and security forces, international organizations, non-governmental organizations, and the private sector.
